Essential first aid skills everyone should know

Accidents and medical emergencies can happen at any time. First aid training gives you the knowledge to respond quickly, limit injury, and help someone until EMS arrives.

Classes cover CPR, wound care, choking, and how to recognize a heart attack, stroke, or other serious condition. That knowledge makes homes, workplaces, and public places safer.

Skills for everyday emergencies

  • CPR: keep oxygen moving to vital organs during cardiac arrest
  • Choking response, including the Heimlich maneuver, for adults, children, and infants
  • Bleeding control with pressure, bandages, and knowing when to get advanced care
  • Burn care: cool the burn and dress it so tissue damage stays smaller
  • Fractures and sprains: immobilize the injury so it does not get worse

Recognize a medical emergency

Awareness matters as much as technique. Faster recognition means faster help.

  • Check responsiveness and breathing
  • Watch circulation and skin color
  • Notice slurred speech, dizziness, or severe pain
  • Call 911 as soon as the emergency is clear

Use the equipment you already have

  • AEDs: restore a shockable heart rhythm during cardiac arrest
  • First aid kits: bandages, antiseptics, and splints you actually know how to use
  • Emergency oxygen when the class includes it and the situation calls for it

Situations that need a specific response

  • Severe allergic reactions and how to use an epinephrine auto-injector
  • Heat exhaustion and heat stroke
  • Hypothermia and frostbite
  • Poisoning or overdose until emergency personnel arrive
  • Seizures and fainting: safe positioning and monitoring
