Employees found a coworker unresponsive
On June 26, 2025, a tenant employee collapsed near his desk at a local office. Coworkers heard the fall and found him unconscious and unresponsive.
Employees called 911 and alerted security. Security officer Esperanza Escalante arrived and saw agonal breathing, a sign of cardiac arrest. She could not find a pulse, so she placed AED pads on the employee and the AED delivered a shock.
They kept CPR going
Esperanza began chest compressions while coworker Thomas Vargas helped. The AED delivered a second shock, and they continued CPR without stopping.
Tim Tlusty arrived and alternated compressions with Esperanza. The AED delivered a third shock. No more shocks were needed.
The Chicago Fire Department arrived, took over care, and stabilized the employee. He was taken to Northwest Hospital.
The employee was alert and responsive
As of July 3, 2025, the employee remained in the hospital. He was alert, responsive, and reported to be in good spirits.
This documented response shows why a working AED and people who can start CPR both matter. The team called for help, used the equipment, and kept compressions going until firefighters arrived.
